CAT MAJOR ESSAY

Lavar Lewis
Music Technology
Education and Life: A Personal Statement
Making a statement in this world can sometime be the hardest thing to do. Being a CAT major allows you to do so by giving students the opportunity to express themselves through a creative and innovative way. Whether it’s through Animation, Game Development, Digital Video or whatever your anticipated major may be. I personally chose to express myself through Music Technology, because it allows me to pursue my passion in music and learn more about the culture.  That’s the advantage one receives from being a CAT major; a further understanding of the world of art, music, and visual production.
Self expression is what being a CAT major represents.  Individuality and originality are a big part of this program as well, because the students are required to do projects of their own in the courses provided.  For example, I am currently taking Music Improv and in that class we, the students, are creating music from instruments on impulse utilizing our creative juices.  Allowing us to show our own individuality and originality through the instruments provided in the class.  Thus, giving us, the students, the opportunity to display some self expression, participate in class, and have fun jamming at the same time.
Music is far more than just a major and few classes for me.  It’s a way of life and the way I live entirely.  Ever since I can remember I’ve been involved in some type of music, whether it was a choir, band, or being a hip-hop artist.  Going to a performing arts elementary school really molded me into looking at music in a whole different perspective.  I saw music as everyday life rather than just a tune I would hear from time to time.
Going into college, I was looking for a school that was notorious for having an excellent music program.  Bloomfield fit that criterion I was looking for perfectly and that’s why I chose to study here.  Music Technology is the perfect major for me, considering I am currently attempting to pursue a career in hip-hop.  That’s what I mean by music being more than just a major and few class courses.  It’s really a way of life for me and I plan to continue until it becomes my permanent profession.
The Music Technology department gives me the opportunity to further pursue my dreams and passion while learning at the same time.  It allows me to get a deeper understanding of the craft and the culture of the history of music.  That is why it’s really a big deal for me to become a CAT major because it gives me the ability to actually learn about something that is dear to me and has a huge affect on my life.  Music is my soul rather than just my thoughts on a sheet of paper that eventually transfers onto a track, which eventually becomes a song viewable for the public.  That’s what Music Technology means to me, it’s a way of life rather than just an ordinary anticipated major.
